Centuries ago, the royal family of Japan was under attack from an evil force. The Emperor sought the five greatest samurai the country had to offer, turning him into his own personal guard. The five samurai fought off the evil, but the steel of man did have the power to vanquish it.
At their darkest hour, the five samurai were led by a shadowy figure to a mysterious river. There they bathed in its waters and once they climbed back on shore, they discovered they had had been granted great power. Using this new power, they battled the evil once again and were nearly victorious, but lost control and allowed it to escape.
They found they could not control this power on their own and sought the help of a legendary blacksmith and mystic who lived deep in the mountains. The journey was a hard one, but they eventually reached their goal. In exchange for something that must not be said, the mystic agreed to create special tools that allow the samurais to harness their newfound power. They surprised to find that the mystic had created not a weapon per say, but magical brushes, brushes that would later be converted into Shodophones.
Using these mystical brushes and their powers, they finally succeeded in defeat the great evil and sealed it away. The five samurai were hailed as heroes and made personal retainers of the royal family. The five heroes became known as the Samurai Sentai Shinkenger.
The lineage of the five samurais continued throughout the generations all the way to the present day as they continue to protect the royal family and Japan from the evil that dare threaten it. When a Shinkenger dies, another in their family line takes over. Each generation, the first born child, be it male or female, are brought to the river and dipped into the water. Those that are chosen, gain the power and right to be a Shinkenger, those who don't..
The Shinkenger's ancient enemy are the Gedoushu who travel through the cracks and claim the sacred river to be their own. They can only be seen by those baptized by the river, but can very much effect the world around them.
